What better way to celebrate dad this year than a kayak excursion to the caves at the La Jolla cove?

San Diego Bike and Kayak is honoring fathers this year with a free kayak rental or tour when you join him for the ride on Father’s day- Sunday, June, 20th all day long, or on Saturday, June 19th before 9am or after 4pm. That right, when you explore (either on your own or as part of one of our guided tours) the seven caves of La Jolla, kelpbeds, the La Jolla Ecological Reserve, and the Cliffside, your dad joins for free!

The conditions of the Pacific Ocean in San Diego make kayaking easy and fun! So easy in fact, that no previous experience is required. If you decide to explore on your own we will go over our custom water map with you before you hit the water so you know where to go to see the best sights and marine wildlife. Bring your snorkel gear- or rent some from us- to view the sea creatures close up!

If your prefer to join one of our kayak tours, we’ll lead you on a great adventure- All of our San Diego kayak tours include the kayak, life jacket, paddle, helmet, and of course one of our delightful, certified kayaking tour guides.

Either way we’ll make 2010 a Father’s Day Weekend to remember! Click here to register online or book a reservation directly by calling (858) 454-1010.

The “Perfect” Day In La Jolla

March 8th, 2010 in Uncategorized

The beautiful sea swept cliffs, soft sand beaches, boutique-studded streets, exceptional restaurants and hotels, and plenty of year-round sunshine make La Jolla the ideal setting for a perfect day in paradise. La Jolla—Spanish for “the jewel”—is a prosperous seaside resort community spanning seven miles of cavorting coastline approximately 12 miles north of downtown San Diego.

No matter what your version of paradise, La Jolla is sure to offer something perfect for everyone. Whether it’s a hike in along the sandstone cliffs of Torrey Pines State Park, a round at Torrey Pines Golf Course, a visit to the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, seal sightings at Children’s Pool, or just a lazy beach bum day in the sun, La Jolla aims to please both young and old, adventurous and blissfully relaxed. Come See the Seals; by Bike, Kayak, or Both!

March 1st, 2010 in Uncategorized

Whether you are here for a to visit the world-famous San Diego Zoo, a stroll through the Flower Fields in Carlsbad or just to enjoy the amazing waves and sunshine San Diego has to offer in the spring, our Bike and Kayak tour guides are happy to show you some of the finer, local scenes including the seal habitats on the picturesque La Jolla seashore.

Why should you choose San Diego Bike and Kayak?

32 million people visit San Diego each year. But only 80,000 visit the tide pools and the harbor seals in La Jolla and half of that kayak for the “au natural” encounter. San Diego Bike and Kayak will take you to the best spots to view the seals by land or sea.

We offer safe, guided tours of the caves and harbor seal dwellings along the coastline, called “haul-outs” via kayak. While they are hauled-out on the rocks in easy view, be sure to bring your waterproof camera for some up close and personal pictures of the seals and their pups.

Should you prefer to travel with wheels over paddles, the best biking stop to catch the seals in San Diego’s spring months is the La Jolla Children’s Pool and Seawall where they lay their claim to the sand. Read the rest of this entry »

San Diego Kayak Tour Guide Rescues Snorkeler

June 17th, 2009 in Uncategorized

Watch the Video!

On one sunny June day, Maria Webb of San Diego Bike & Kayak set off with a group of kayakers on a tour just like any other. However, Maria didn’t know that her training and skills would make her a hero that day as she successfully rescued an unconscious snorkeler in one of La Jolla’s sea caves.

Ms. Webb was just introducing her group of kayakers to Clam Cove after showing them the sea lions, when she heard a distressed call for help. This call came from a female companion of a male snorkeler who’d been swept into the coves after an unexpectedly large wave overcame him.

Webb stayed calm and immediately walkie-talkied to her colleagues on land and advised her tour group to stay put. She quickly paddled toward the unconscious near-drowning man and gathered him safely onto her kayak. Because of her immediate call, Webb was able to get lifeguards out to the scene and resuscitate the man, who was later taken to a local hospital.

“My first priority was just to get help on the way so he could get to land,” said Webb, who responded exceptionally to her first real-life rescue situation.

Maria and other San Diego Bike & Kayak guides are well prepared for this type of scenario. Marcella Di Michieli, president of San Diego Bike & Kayak said she was proud of Webb and happy that her rigorous training had paid off. All of the guides at San Diego Bike & Kayak are required to be certified for professional rescue first aid and attain a lifeguard rating.

“Our employees actually go through 120 to 150 hours of multi-faceted training to help them safely determine a tour route on a given day covering a variety of emergency response situations on land and in the water,” explained Di Michieli.

Mark Korsh of San Diego Lifeguards also lauded Webb’s performance, saying that the company’s guides often train directly with their lifeguard professionals.

“She followed to a ‘T’ the instructions given to her through our training,” said Korsh.

Fortunately, rescue situations like this one are not common at La Jolla shores. But it is great to know that the guides who lead San Diego Bike & Kayak tours are skilled and prepared to handle any emergency situation that may arise.
