Downtown San Diego

Downtown San Diego is a bustling city skyline on the edge of San Diego Bay.  Its agreeable weather and close proximity to transportation, culture, shopping, and tourism make it an excellent destination.

While relatively small when compared to downtown regions in other large cities, downtown San Diego's revived infrastructure provides a diversity of attractions and its charm keeps visitors coming.

One of the newest and perhaps the most integral piece in downtown's growth is Petco Park.  Home of the San Diego Padres, this open airpark combines contemporary and retro elements to create a historic feel amidst the up and coming East Village neighborhood.

Opened in 2004, Petco Parkhas helped redirect San Diego's suburban sprawl back to the central urban region.

The major hotspot in downtown is the Gaslamp Quarter.  A national historic district once known as a red light district, this southwest corner of the city along Fourth and Fifth Ave. is now well known for its dining, shopping, and entertainment.

The Gaslamp Quarter is also the center of nightlife in San Diego with a myriad of clubs, bars, music venues, drawing crowds from young urban hipsters to baby boomers alike.

West of the Gaslamp Quarter lies Seaport Village, a fourteen acre waterfront complex reminiscent of century old harbor side villages.  Cobblestone pathways lead in and out of the shops and eateries, meandering past ponds, fountains, and the sail-filled corner of San Diego Bay.

Another popular tourist attraction is the Embarcadero.  Nestled along the water's edge, the Embarcadero runs along the east side of the San Diego harbor from Seaport Village towards Shelter Island and Lindbergh Field, San Diego'sinternational airport.  This short boardwalk is home to the USS Midway, the Maritime Museum, the Star of India, contemporary public art structures, and various other waterfront restaurants and shops.  san diego sunset tour

The USS Midway is a majestic sight within San Diego's busy harbor. Now a floating museum, this decommissioned aircraft carrier began its illustrious carrier in 1947 and sailed every ocean during its 47 yearreign.

Multiple major technological modifications and combative improvements were performed on USS Midway carrier over the years to keep the ship up to date, and its longevity spanned integral roles in the Pacific and during Operation Desert Storm.

Nearly next door to the USS Midway is the Maritime Museum of San Diego.  Known worldwide for its historic vessels, the museum has one of the finest collections of historic ships in the world, including the Star of India, the world's oldest active ship.  Exhibits include visual and hands-on displays of technological advancement throughout maritime history, relics, and replicas.

If you're looking for a bit more culture and history while visiting dowtown San Diego, look no further than Balboa Park.  Balboa Park is the nation's largest urban cultural park and contains 15 major museums, the world famous San Diego Zoo, spectacular performing arts venues, and beautiful gardens.  An architectural wonder, the Spanish influence on the buildings and Plazas is undeniably breathtaking.  It's like a different world in the park, but it's just up the hill from downtown.
