la_jolla_kelp_forest_with_the_garibaldi Kelp forests are a type of marine ecosystem established around colonies of kelp and these kelp beds contain a rich biodiversity. Kelp can stretch up to 90 feet or more from their anchors on the ocean floor to the surface, providing a vertical infrastructure that is home to many fish and invertebrate species. Kelp forests also often attract mammals including whales, sea lions, seals, and of course scuba diving humans and kayakers, since these kelp beds are visible at the surface from atop the kayaks!

Kelp forests are found in temperate ocean waters around the globe wherever water conditions are conducive to the successful establishment of kelp colonies. Kelp favors water below about 68 degrees fahrenheit.

Various species of kelp favor different ranges of temperatures under this limit, but none grow in waters where the temperature is consistently warmer.  Relatively clear water is also necessary, as kelp depends on photosynthesis. The kelp leaves are also corrugated, so they can absorb more sunglight for photosynthesis. The kelp forest is estimated to grow between 1-3 feet each day!

The kelp beds are massive and extend the length of the coast between La Jolla and Point Loma! The kelp forest in La Jolla loops around just to the northwest of La Jolla Cove and is approximately one quarter mile wide. The kelp beds are attached to the ocean floor within the Ecological Reserve at approximately 80 feet.

In the Kelp Beds, enjoy the stillness and serenity of the water as a result of these massive kelp beds and paddle throught the kelp beds to seek out harbor seals, dolphins and schools of rockfish and sardines. Call to reserve your La Jolla kayak tour to explore the kelp beds of La Jolla.
