star_seashell_la_jollaLa Jolla Cove is a very small beach tucked between adjacent sandstone cliffs at the cul-de-sac of Coast Blvd.  It is within a short walk of the village area of downtown La Jolla, and is a top snorkeling location.  La Jolla Cove faces to the north, a unique quality in southern California, that limits most the ocean activity in the Cove.  Therefore, it is usually very calm in the Cove and the visibility is usually quite good—sometimes even up to thirty feet!  Snorkeling in La Jolla Cove is a very popular summertime activity. La Jolla snorkelers will see lots of Garibaldi, the California state fish, as well as yellow tails, sardines, rockfish and sometimes even some leopard sharks.

The north facing La Jolla Cove has unusually coarse sand. Grassy Scripps Park is immediately adjacent and an excellent area for picnicking.  La Jolla Cove lies within the San Diego La Jolla Underwater Park and Ecological Reserve, which helps to ensure that marine life remains plentiful. This is a look but don't touch area and the possession of game is unlawful.

The waters off this beach are reserved for swimming, snorkeling, and diving only.   The taking or possession of sea life or artifacts is prohibited.  La Jolla Cove is also a popular launch area for open water swimmers.  Kayaking in La Jolla Cove is not permitted, but kayakers can paddle nearby along the point.
