The Cave Store - Bike Tour Stop #8

The La Jolla Cave Store is one of our final stops along our La Jolla Freefall Bike Tour.

la jolla cave store bike tourThe Cave Store on Coast Blvd. in La Jolla. This is the only La Jolla Sea Cave that is accessible by land. The La Jolla Sea Caves are a historical landmark, that attracts not only visitors; however, local kayakers, swimmers, and snorkelers. A tunnel was carved out into Sunny Jim's Cave, on of the seven sea caves in La Jolla, and a stairwell was builit with 144 steps inside this tunnel in 1902. The stairwell at the Cave store in La Jolla leads to a wood platform right inside Sunny Jim's Cave that has a view fight out into the Pacific Ocean off of La Jolla Shores beach. This man- made tunnel was carved out under the direction of artist Gustauf Schultz. The cave was later named "Sunny Jim's Cave" after a cereal mascot whose profile matched that of the cave opening.

The series of thes sea caves in La Jolla are perched within a 75-million-year-old sandstone sea cliff.  The seven sculpted caverns face north into La Jolla Shores. The seven sea caves are named as follows, from west to east:  The Clam’s Cave, Sunny Jim’s Cave, Arch Cave, Sea Surprize, Shopping Cart, Little Sister, and White Lady. The La Jolla Sea Caves are only accessible by kayak, with the exception of Sunny Jim's Cave, which is the only one of the La Jolla sea caves that is accessible by land via the Cave Store. We invite you to visit the cave store with us on our La Jolla Freefall Bike Tour or Kayak Tour of the 7 Caves.
