La Jolla, pronounced "La Hoya," is a lovely seaside community along the central coast of San Diego. Known as the Jewel of California, it sits perched upon several miles of sandstone cliffs along the Pacific shoreline.
The "village" as locals call it, is a fusion of past and present, with historic landmarks standing next to world class hotels, restaurants, and art galleries. Along the emerald shores below, La Jolla is home to a variety of natural treasures, from sea caves and coves, to abundant indigenous wildlife.
Downtown La Jolla is centered along Prospect Street and lined with designer boutiques, fine dining, and art galleries. A sophisticated and elegant village, La Jolla's reputation is reflected in the seemingly endless million dollar views.
Visit the world famous La Jolla Cove for a glimpse of the majestic shoreline. A natural north facing cove, this intimate beach draws crowds in the summer to its crystal clear waters and views up the Southern California coast. The sandy shore and calm waters are a favorite for families and children due to its northerly direction. Swimmers and snorkelers also frequent the cove for the varied underwater landscape.
The sea caves of La Jolla open outward along the waterline of the cliffs just east of the cove. Carved out over the centuries, these awe inspiring cliff formations are easily viewed and visited by kayakers, snorkelers, swimmers, and tourists on Coast Walk above. They are often overlooked because of their sheltered location, but a trip to their waters is an unforgettable experience and a treasure worth seeking.
La Jolla Shores is the primary beach along the La Jolla coastline, and its reputation as a family friendly beach does not disappoint. The expansive sandy beach has calm waters for swimmers, easy waves for beginning surfers, playful crashers for boogieboarders and bodysurfers, and plenty of space for beach blankets and umbrellas. A mile long, palm tree lined boardwalk separates the sand from Kellogg Park, a grassy open space perfect for picnics, games, and gatherings. Stay for the whole day and catch up around one of several bonfire pits to watch a famous La Jolla sunset.
Another picture-perfect La Jolla destination is the Children's Pool, home to San Diego's harbor seals. Their tenure on this short stretch of sand has been controversial and tumultuous, but their playful antics and adorable faces demand attention. These cute creatures haul out along the shore to rest from long, deep ocean swims, and visitors can watch them in action along a secure, manmade breakwater. They'll play in the waves, roll in the sand, or sunbathe on nearby rocks.
If you're looking for a bit more excitement on the water, head south to Windansea Beach, a local haven for surfers. The reef-break below the surface produces can produce world-class waves, and the surfing talent here will take your breath away. Visit the iconic Windansea surf shack, a historic landmark, and an essential piece of Southern California's surfing culture and story.
The center of La Jolla is Mount Soledad, the highest point of coastal elevation within San Diego. Around the Mount Soledad Memorial Cross, one can find expansive views in every direction, the shores looking west, the coastline looking north, the foothills to the east, and Point Loma, Mission Bay, downtown San Diego, Coronado, and Mexico to the south. The view atop Mount Soledad is the finest in San Diego, but beware, for after you take it all in, you'll want to visit it all too!
