The La Jolla Cove

A short walk from downtown La Jolla, La Jolla Cove is an excellent swimming, diving, and snorkeling spot.

star_seashell_la_jollaLa Jolla Cove is a very small beach tucked between adjacent sandstone cliffs at the cul-de-sac off Coast Blvd.  The Cove sits beneath Scripps Park, a grassy open space for picnics and play.  La Jolla Cove faces to the north, a unique quality in southern California, that limits most the ocean activity in the Cove.  Therefore, it is usually very calm and the visibility is usually quite good-sometimes even up to thirty feet!

That's why snorkeling and kayaking near La Jolla Cove are such great activities.  There is an abundance of marine life and the typically calm waters make the La Jolla Cove area a recreational haven!

Snorkeling in La Jolla Cove is one of the most popular summertime activities in La Jolla. Snorkelers will see lots of Garibaldi, the California state fish, as well as half moon, yellow tails, sardines, rockfish and sometimes even some leopard sharks. La Jolla Cove lies within the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park and Ecological Reserve, which helps to ensure that marine life remains plentiful. This is a look but don't touch area and the possession of game is unlawful.

Because La Jolla Cove is part of the Ecological Reserve, the waters off this beach are reserved for swimming, snorkeling, and diving only.   The taking or possession of sea life or artifacts is prohibited.  La Jolla Cove is also a popular launch area for open water swimmers.  Kayaking in La Jolla Cove is not permitted, but kayakers can paddle nearby along the point.

Leopard Shark Encounter — La Jolla, Ca

leoparla_jolla_kayak_tour_of the _leopard_sharks

Leopard Sharks are often found in and around La Jolla Cove. However, the leopard sharks can be found in large numbers in the shallow, sandy flats at La Jolla Shores between June and November.

They swim around in just a few feet of water and venture into these shallow waters each year to spawn.  The leopard sharks are totally harmless, and snorkeling with the leopard sharks is an unforgettable experience!  Click Here: La Jolla Snorkeling to learn more about snorkeling rentals and snorkeling tours in La Jolla!
