La Jolla Sea Caves

white lady cave la jollaFacing north towards La Jolla Shores, the seven sea caves of La Jolla in are perched within a 75-million-year-old sandstone sea cliff.  The caves are named as follows, from west to east:  The Clam's Cave, Sunny Jim's Cave, Arch Cave, Sea Surprize, Shopping Cart, Little Sister, and White Lady. These sea caves are only accessible by kayak, except Sunny Jim's.

The only cave accessible by land, the entrance to Sunny Jim's is via a hand-dug tunnel leading down from the historical landmark, the Cave Store.

Baum gave the cave this unique name because the shape of the cave's opening resembled the profile of a cartoon mascot for British Force Wheat Cereal in the 1920's, Sunny Jim.

The White Lady cave is an excellent example, as it is named for the white silhouette created by crashing waves in front of the entrance.
