Mission Bay: Our San Diego Equatic Playground

mission bay park benchMission Bay Park consists of over 4,000 acres, approximately 46% land and 54% water. There are 27 miles of shoreline, 19 of which are sandy beaches.  Mission Bay was originally named False Bay by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo,  who came upon it in 1542. In those days, it was a vast tidal marsh that could confuse mariners into believing it was the larger San Diego Bay just to the south. In 1944, civic leaders began a series of steps to dredge the marsh and create an aquatic recreation facility. Today, Mission Bay is used for speed boats, sailboats, row boats, waterskiing, and picnics.  It is also home to many species of birds, fish, and other animals and has a nature reserve at it's northern end, near Crown Point.  Mission Bay has a path around its west and north sides that makes jogging, rollerblading, and biking very popular also. Check out spectacular Mission Bay on our La Jolla Freefall Bike Tour and our Half Day Bike Tour.

The Park at Mission Bay is like an aquatic playground, with a network of waterways and inlets, which is why boating is the best way to explore Mission Bay. Sea World is also located on Mission Bay, in the southeast quadrant of the park. Mission Bay Park is divided up into many different sections that each have notable features.

These include: Vacation Isle with its resort hotels; Crown Point, a favorite spot for volleyball, picnics and bonfires; Ski Beach, a hot spot for parties and picnics; Santa Clara Point, for water sports; Sail Bay, with its running path and Fanuel mission bay park arial viewPark; Mariners Point, home of the ESPN X-Games; Quivera Basin, offering fishing and scuba diving charters; Dana Landing, the busy boat launching ramp; East Mission Bay Park, with its information center, endless grass parks, & resorts; and Fiesta Island, the dune-covered island that is popular for biking and annual triathalons
