The History of Pacific Beach : 1885-The Present

It all started back in 1885.  A massive advertising and public relations campaign finally linked  the East Coast to San Diego by railroad.  This began the immigration of Americans into the growing city.

old pacific beach photo of cass streetBy the year 1886, thousands of people were traveling into San Diego each month.  Egar to make their fortune land speculators began to move into the areas now called, Del Mar, El Cajon, La Jolla and Pacific Beach.

Lots went on sale in December of 1887, as the San Diego Union promoted the new city of “False Bay”, (now called Mission Bay) as the new “Geat Enterprise of the san diego border to mexicoPacific” began its first real estate transactions.

Today, the hip community of Pacifc Beach boasts close to 50,000 residents and over 1,300 businesses; however, less than 100 years ago we were but a sleepy plot of dirt located next to the Pacific Ocean.

Oh, if only investors knew what was to come in the future for Americas finest City.

We hope you get the chance  to visit our beachside community, and enjoy the outdoor lifestyle that Pacific Beach embraces.  P.B has become one of the most popular places to live, work and visit in the San Diego area.

  • 1887 - Advertising of “False Bay” and San Diego’s magnificent beaches, and unsurpassed yachting, fishing, hunting, land boom.

  • 1888 – The San Diego railway was extended to PB, and the American Driving Park (racetrack) opened.  Wyatt Earp raced his horses there.

  • 1890- The Land boom was short lived, as land sales quickly halted during the Depression of the 1890’s.war planes san diego

  • 1900 – Lot Sales for $25

  • World War II brings thousands of people to San Diego to help with the war effort.

  • 1945 – Mission Bay is formed as a man made bay is dredged to improve the City, as a flood channel and Ingram Bridge is built.

Post World War II - San Diego's rebirth

The aftermath of the war brought tremendous growth to the entire City of San Diego, as many servicemen decided to stay, and the dirt lots of Pacific Beach rapidly turned into the thriving beach community that it is today. Development of Navy housing, schools, library, movie theater and other businesses all lead to a residential boom that now homes a Mecca for nightlife, beachgoers, and the outdoor lifestyle that makes Pacific Beach.
