WindanSea - A Surfers Paradise in La Jolla, CA

Windansea Beach in La Jolla, a community in the City of San Diego, is a scenic beach of gently-sloped cliffs covered with vegetation. The rocky shore of Windansea Beach is known for its beautiful scenery and surf breaks created by underwater reefs. Large sandstone rocks make for an amazing view while also providing a secluded atmosphere for beach-goers and sunbathing. Much of the beach at Windansea experiences shorebreak, a condition on steep beaches which results in hard breaking surf at the shoreline. 

Windansea Surf Culture

Recognized for its landmark grass-roofed shack that some believe dates back to the early 1940's, this beach enjoys a colorful history involving the signature structure and a community-oriented surfing club. One of the original surf breaks in California, Windansea Beach is one of the most beautiful secluded beaches in all of San Diego, California. It is most widely known for its large surf break and for the locals who frequent this small beach which lies at the western point of Nautilus St. in La Jolla. The large waves at Windansea make it a choice San Diego beach for surfing. Windansea beach is home to the Windansea Surf Club which emerged in the early 1960's from a group of the most accomplished surfers and was named for the premier La Jolla reef break frequented by the club's earliest members.  Windansea Surf Club is a community-based surf organization of several hundred members who participate in surf competitions and donate time and resources to the local community and its needs. Formed in 1962 by Chuck Hasley, the club was initially  was created so avid surfers could compete in a Los Angeles/Malibu surf competition that required entrants be members of established surf clubs.

To get to this beach, take Interstate 5 to La Jolla Village Drive, westbound. Turn left on Torrey Pines Road and follow it to Pearl Street where you will turn right. Turn left on La Jolla Boulevard at the signal and right on Nautilus.
